Working through findings in WordPress
How to read the findings list in the WordPress plugin, expand occurrences, scan again after a fix and keep an eye on your page quota.
The plugin brings the results to where you edit your website. Fix things in WordPress, scan again from WordPress – and see what remains.
The work list
Under Tools → Accessibility, section “Findings”, the open findings of the last scan are listed, one row per rule:
- Severity – critical, serious, moderate or minor,
- Finding with a note on how to fix it,
- Success criterion,
- Occurrences – how often the rule is violated,
- Affected pages.
The list contains the open, binding findings. Anything you assessed as “no defect” in the service does not appear; neither do uncertain results and manual checks.
Expanding occurrences
The “Show … occurrences” link expands a rule. Each occurrence shows:
- the page and the selector – or “the entire page”,
- measured values such as “contrast 2.41:1 instead of 4.5:1” and colour values,
- where relevant, the state in which the element becomes visible, and at which screen width,
- the HTML snippet that helps you find the spot in WordPress.
Paging happens in steps of 20. Expanding and paging are ordinary links; the plugin needs no JavaScript.
Screenshots stay in the service. “Open the full report with screenshots” leads there; if you are not signed in, you are taken to the sign-in page first.
Fixing and scanning again
- Fix the occurrences in WordPress – in the editor, in the theme or in a plugin’s settings.
- Choose “Scan now”. While a scan is running, the button is hidden; a second scan would only use up quota.
- After a few minutes, choose “Check whether the scan has finished”.
Fixed findings disappear from the list. The page deliberately does not reload on its own; “Refresh status” fetches status and findings again. Without it, the page shows the cached state for up to 5 minutes.
Quota
“Quota” shows how many pages were scanned in the current billing period, how many remain and when the period ends. Every scan counts the pages scanned. How many pages your plan includes: Plans, subscription and cancellation.
What the plugin cannot do
- Assess findings – that happens in the scan report in the service: Reviewing findings.
- Answer manual checks: Answering the manual checks.
- Publish: From scan to published statement.
- Repair anything on your website automatically. That is deliberate – a plugin that rewrites other people’s themes causes more harm than it fixes.
